|SUBJ:||Faculty Anti-Semitism at Columbia|
It is especially important that graduates of Columbia carry out this action item.
"The Jews are not a nation... The Jewish state is a racist state that does not have a right to exist."
The author of that sentiment, Joseph Massad, may be the most racist professor now teaching at a major American university. He has turned his appointment in Middle Eastern Studies at Columbia University into a platform from which to promulgate anti-Semitism and advocate the murder of innocent people because they happen to be Israelis.
Please write to the President of Columbia University Lee C. Bollinger and to Derek Wittner, Columbia College Class of '65 and Dean of Alumni Affairs and Development.
Ask that they carefully consider the implications of having on their faculty an aggressively anti-Semitic professor who advocates terrorism. Demand that Columbia refuse to grant tenure to Assistant Professor Joseph Massad.
Lee C. Bollinger, President
Dean of Alumni Affairs and Development
Here is a sample letter for someone who is a graduate of Columbia (fill in the class or other degree information). Others will have to change at least the first paragraph.
Dear Mr. Wittner,
Dear Mr. Bollinger,
As a graduate of Columbia University (Columbia College, class of 19??), it grieves me to hear a member of the Columbia faculty spouting race hatred and advocating violence.
Assistant professor Joseph Massad's preaching of hatred and terrorism flies not only in the face of human decency, but also of simple truth. His hatred of Jews leads him to call Israel a racist state, the embodiment of "European white supremacy," when in fact over half of Israelis are descended from African and Asian ancestors, and when anyone not willfully blind would see that Israel's complex society is comprised of Jews of every "racial" complexion -- black, brown, and beige.
But Massad goes beyond name calling and beyond the racist assertion that among all the nations of the earth, the Jewish nation should be singled out and denied the right to statehood, to advocate the destruction of the Jewish state by violent means, and to praise the terrorists who work to destroy Israel since, in Massad's words, "It is only by making the costs of Jewish supremacy too high that Israeli Jews will give it up."
Speaking on campus last year, Massad compared the Prime Minister of Israel with Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels. This from a man who advocates the violent destruction of a democratic nation of six million Jews.
I urge you to remove this mouthpiece of race hatred and this advocate of terrorism from the University by denying him tenure.
